Still in Limbo 1 year Later!

It is simply an outrage and explains so much about why this Island nation has been so poor for so long. The world has simply turned its back on the Haitian people again. 

After more than a year it is reported that less than 5 percent of the earthquake debris has been cleared in Haiti.

About 1 million people remain homeless, and neighborhood-sized camps look like permanent  shantytowns on the fields and plazas of the capital. The cholera epidemic that exploded outside the quake zone killed more than 3,600 people, and political instability continues.

Still, only 15 percent of needed temporary shelters have been built, with few permanent water and sanitation facilities.

Money, or lack of it, is still a major problem.  Americans alone donated more than $1.4 billion to private organizations to help survivors and rebuild, but just 38 percent has been spent to provide recovery and rebuilding aid, according to a Chronicle of Philanthropy survey of 60 major relief organizations, much to the surprise of many generous individuals and groups who give and raised money so unselfishly.

More than $5.3 billion was pledged at a March 31 donors conference for a period of 18 months. Only $824 million has been delivered, according to former U.S. President Clinton's U.N. Office of the Special Envoy to Haiti. About $3.2 billion in public funding still is owed.

Can you work in Indonesia?

Earthquake, Volcano and a Tsunami.

The powerful earthquake that struck Indonesia late Monday near the Mentawai islands off the west coast of the island of Sumatra, had a 7.7 magnitude, it killed 23 people and triggered tsunami waves.

The 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck at a depth of 13 miles (20 kilometers) off Sumatra island, and was followed by a 5.0 magnitude aftershock in less than an hour. On top of the 23 confirmed deaths, more than 160 people are missing.

The quake caused huge waves of up to 3 meters high that hit the Mentawai islands, sending thousands of panicked residents running to higher ground.

Hundreds of homes were damaged by the quake and the waves. The government already sent aid including emergency shelters, food and other supplies, but stormy weather is making it difficult for the rescue teams to reach the affected areas.

Officials were rushing on Tuesday to evacuate thousands of residents surrounding Mount Merapi, the country's most volatile volcano, since pressure is building up according to scientists.

Indonesia is vulnerable to earthquakes and volcanic activity since it’s located on the Pacific Ring of Fire.

Rebuilding work will begin when the dust settles. We will keep you posted.

Cholera outbreak spreads in Haiti

It appears to be confirmed that the actual cause of the severe sickness in Haiti is Cholera. The Miami Herald reported on October 22 that Haitian health officials are blaming the deaths of more than 100 people suffering from acute severe diarrhea and dehydration on the dread illness.

The cholera outbreak, with 253 deaths and more than 3,000 confirmed cases counted as of noon Monday, has so far been contained to the region around the epicenter — the central rural areas around the Artibonite River. read more

About 60 miles north of the capital, scores of children and adults are doubled over in a hospital courtyard, stretched out on benches or cots, racked by convulsive stomach disorder or limp with dehydration. They have buckets by their sides and intravenous solutions dripping into their arms. 

 

According to the New York Times,

"the Haitian government reported optimistically on Sunday that the epidemic might be stabilizing. Fatalities have declined — from 10.6 percent of known cases three days earlier to 8.2 percent now. But health experts cautioned that the danger remained high. Daniel Epstein, a spokesman for the Pan American Health Organization, said Monday that in 75 percent of cholera cases, the carriers are asymptomatic. That would mean that the number of people who have the microbe — and could spread it — may be closer to 12,000"

Although all are concerned about the crowded, unhygienic living conditions in the tent and tarp camps sheltering some 1.3 million displaced people, the slums are a potentially bigger problem as they do not have even the portable, cleanable latrines that many camps do.

Making this situation so much more intolerable is the fact that, considering all of the money and resources standing by for building housing and clean infrastructure, this outbreak was avoidable.

As far as hiring for construction work in Haiti, it is doubtful that U.S. citizens will be allowed to enter the country unless they are already working there and, in any case, companies would be hesitant to bring workers into the country until the cholera is contained. We will keep you posted.

Haiti's President says progress is being made!

The Miami Herald reported that Haitian Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive "insisted this week that progress is being made in his devastated homeland despite the trickle of international aid."

Bellerive spoke at the closing of the Americas Conference, an annual event sponsored by the Miami Herald and the World Bank. Bellerive said "millions are being spent on new highways, students are back in school, a new multimillion dollar teaching hospital is under construction, and thousands of new apartments are coming on line. We've only had 240 days, And what we have accomplished in those brief 240 days is, under the circumstances, remarkable when weighed against the challenges.'' The Herald also reported that "only 18 percent of the $5.3 billion pledged by international donors has been disbursed so far.

In a separate interview Pamela Cox, the World Bank's vice president for Latin America and the Caribbean, called post-earthquake Haiti "one of the worst situations that the world has faced" and said, " coordinating the efforts of so many disparate aid bodies was in itself challenging."

$1.6 billion in projects to rebuild Haiti

PORT-AU-PRINCE, (Reuters) - A special recovery commission announced more than $1.6 billion in projects to rebuild earthquake-ravaged Haiti on Tuesday, including a $200 million plan to create 50,000 new jobs in agriculture.

Haiti Construction update

According to  Mary Beth Sheridan in her article entitled, "U.S.-Sponsored Conference Pledged  Billions to Rebuild Haiti, But Little Paid Out published in the Washington  Post on July 19th, 

"There have been no major outbreaks of disease. But about  180 million square feet of rubble is still piled in heaps around  the capital, while only 5,000 of the 125,000 temporary shelters  promised by the international community have been built."  The reconstruction has  been hobbled by a lack of coordination and cash and by an all-but  incapacitated Haitian government. Although the U.S. government  has spent hundreds of millions on short-term emergency aid, it  has not disbursed the roughly $900 million it pledged for  reconstruction this year, and the rest of the funds are tied to  a supplemental budget bill that has been held up in Congress by  an unrelated dispute over state aid."  Read the full story: http://bit.ly/azcCd4

Construction gaining momentum in some states

Construction employment is beginning to stabilize in Florida, as the number of jobs inched up 0.8 percent in June from May.

Still, year-over-year construction employment in the Sunshine State was down 7.2 percent, which translates to about 28,000 jobs, according to an analysis of federal employment by Associated General Contractors.

The largest year-over-year increase was in Kansas, where construction employment rose 7.7 percent, or 4,400 jobs. The largest percentage job decrease compared to June 2009 was in Nevada – down 24.4 percent, or 19,500 jobs.

Big companies pushing for work in Haiti

Several companies are vying for Haitian cleanup and rebuilding contracts and will need workers when the money starts flowing. According to a report in Thursday's Sun Sentinel, some companies have spent millions of dollars preparing for the day when they receive contracts to begin work.

AshBritt, Inc., based in Pompano Beach, and Bergeron Emergency Services of Pembroke Pines are each spending huge sums of money hoping to cash in when more than $5 billion earmarked for recovery in Haiti begins to flow.

AshBritt's CEO estimates his firm has invested $20 million to build a permanent encampment for workers in Haiti that includes living quarters, a mess hall, an infirmary and a staff medic.Randall Perkins says, "we have spent months with consultants to understand the maze of how money is going to be spent."

The head of Bergeron Emergency Services, J.R. Bergeron, acknowledges that his Haitian investment has been about $750,000 to date.

Despite the money pledged for Haiti's reconstruction very little has happened. According to a congressional report issued last month, just 2 percent of the $5.3 billion in near-term aid pledges has been delivered.The responsibility for disbursing the funds that do come in rests with the 26-member reconstruction commission led by Haitian Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive and former U.S. President Bill Clinton.

According to some estimates, the earthquake destroyed more than 100,000 homes, 1,300 schools and 50 hospitals, along with the presidential palace and most government ministries and offices. The resulting rubble would fill the Louisiana Superdome five times.

DRC Group, based in Mobile, Ala., currently seeking an Engineering Manager, and Ceres Environmental Services Inc., of Brooklyn Park, Minn., also have established a presence in Haiti.

Randall Perkins says, "they need outside expertise, and there's going to be lots of money coming in from abroad to make that happen."
