The devastation is incredible. The need for workers of all types will be needed soon. Once the initial assessment of the damage and safety of workers can be somewhat assured, the work will begin to rebuild. First there will be clearing and excavation needed. If you are experienced or seeking entry level work you and can travel your skills will be needed.

Jobs in Haiti?

ABC News reports:

The billions of dollars in aid that flowed into Haiti after its shattering earthquake were meant to build a new nation with thriving farms, apparel factories, modern hospitals and paved roads in the countryside.

Ambitious plans call for $500 million to build 50 new grade schools, $200 million to give Port-au-Prince its first wastewater treatment plant, and $224 million to create an industrial park for 65,000 garment industry workers — all aimed at laying the groundwork for a new Haiti.

But as the hemisphere's poorest country marks the second anniversary of the earthquake that killed some 300,000 people, only about half of the $4.6 billion in promised aid has been spent. Half a million people are still living in crowded camps. And only four of the 10 largest projects funded by international donors have broken ground. read more

The latest on Haiti Construction Jobs

Millions of construction professionals out of work, not just in the United States, but worldwide; an entire country devastated 6 months ago by an earthquake and in dire need of rebuilding. Yet,6 months later, more building Industry workers are out of work and, according to the Irishtimes.com,

Revelations of mismanagement in the rebuilding of Haiti if reported accurately, would likely reach the level of the BP Oil debacle. Clearly, the construction jobs are required and will bring needed relief to building pros everywhere. Construction companies are as frustrated as workers. The survival of many building companies is at stake. This work will save millions of Haitians, but also tens of thousands of American workers and their companies.

Any progress from the Haitian leadership? According to the Associated Press, 

"Haiti's president handed out medals to celebrities, aid-group directors and politicians for post-earthquake work Monday in a ceremony designed to beat back criticism of an uneven recovery that has left 1.6 million people homeless and destitute six months to the day since the disaster. Twenty-three honorees — including actor Sean Penn, CNN anchor Anderson Cooper and the head of the U.N. peacekeeping mission — crossed a podium in front of the crushed, unrepaired national palace to steady applause. Some smiling, some solemn, each received medals and certificates deeming them Knights of the National Order of Honor and Merit."         -read more

I was surprised to see Anderson Cooper take part in this waste of time and money. The time for giving out medals is 10 years from now when most of the rebuilding is completed. Not now, with more than a million people still waiting for shelter.

Is anyone hiring in Haiti?

One of our members recently asked, "I've talked to a thousand different people in skilled trades, and no one can find any info on companies that will be working in Haiti. Is it to early to expect any kind of organized construction in that area."

That is the very reason we created this Job Search site. To find those companies that are going to be working in Haiti, and in other countries, and hiring skilled construction professionals.

Our research to date shows that some U.S. companies have received contracts (we've posted them here on the site), but they are being forced to try to use Haitian workers first (politically correct, of course). Unfortunately, the Haitians don't have a big enough, or experienced enough workforce to do the really big jobs (one reason there was so much destruction in the first place), so they are currently doing jobs like clearing debris and building very small structures. The big construction jobs can't start until the tons of debris are cleared.

When the really big construction jobs start, like at the Port and the Government buildings, U.S. companies will need skilled workers to get the jobs done right, on time, and on budget.

We have posted companies that will be rebuilding the Port. They are looking for workers with some maritime construction experience but it is always worth taking a look at their openings and getting in front of these companies with your skills.
