Special Report: How to Make Money in Bad Economy

Over the past year hundreds of people have asked my opinion about various business opportunities for making money from home so I have been looking closely at what is out there and trying to separate the good from the bad. There is a lot of bad out there but I have uncovered a few gems. One in particular caught my attention because it involves a gentleman I've known of for several years. His name is Bill Bartmann.

On their cover, Inc Magazine called Bill Bartmann "The Billionaire Nobody Knows." What is even less known than Bill himself is his story, which is arguably the most astounding "rags-to-riches" development in U.S. business history.

Bill Bartmann went from...

- Homeless (lived under a bridge viaduct)
- Gang member
- High-school dropout
- Alcoholic
- Paralyzed (and told he'd never walk again)
- Completely bankrupt with cars repossessed

...to become the 25th wealthiest American, with a net worth at the time that exceeded the likes of Donald Trump, Rupert Murdoch and Ross Perot.

Ironically, Bill made his first fortune during a recession. (His business method only works in a BAD ECONOMY, and today we have, what most economists agree, are the worst economic conditions since the Great Depression.)

Now he's at it again. You should check this out...

Can you work in Indonesia?

Earthquake, Volcano and a Tsunami.

The powerful earthquake that struck Indonesia late Monday near the Mentawai islands off the west coast of the island of Sumatra, had a 7.7 magnitude, it killed 23 people and triggered tsunami waves.

The 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck at a depth of 13 miles (20 kilometers) off Sumatra island, and was followed by a 5.0 magnitude aftershock in less than an hour. On top of the 23 confirmed deaths, more than 160 people are missing.

The quake caused huge waves of up to 3 meters high that hit the Mentawai islands, sending thousands of panicked residents running to higher ground.

Hundreds of homes were damaged by the quake and the waves. The government already sent aid including emergency shelters, food and other supplies, but stormy weather is making it difficult for the rescue teams to reach the affected areas.

Officials were rushing on Tuesday to evacuate thousands of residents surrounding Mount Merapi, the country's most volatile volcano, since pressure is building up according to scientists.

Indonesia is vulnerable to earthquakes and volcanic activity since it’s located on the Pacific Ring of Fire.

Rebuilding work will begin when the dust settles. We will keep you posted.

Are you willing to work in Indonesia? Yes. No.

Cholera outbreak spreads in Haiti

Haitian health officials are blaming the deaths of more than 100 people suffering from acute severe diarrhea and dehydration on the dread illness.
The cholera outbreak, with 253 deaths and more than 3,000 confirmed cases counted as of noon Monday, has so far been contained to the region around the epicenter — the central rural areas around the Artibonite River. read more
About 60 miles north of the capital, scores of children and adults are doubled over in a hospital courtyard, stretched out on benches or cots, racked by convulsive stomach disorder or limp with dehydration. They have buckets by their sides and intravenous solutions dripping into their arms.

According to the New York Times,
"the Haitian government reported optimistically on Sunday that the epidemic might be stabilizing. Fatalities have declined — from 10.6 percent of known cases three days earlier to 8.2 percent now. But health experts cautioned that the danger remained high. Daniel Epstein, a spokesman for the Pan American Health Organization, said Monday that in 75 percent of cholera cases, the carriers are asymptomatic. That would mean that the number of people who have the microbe — and could spread it — may be closer to 12,000"
Although all are concerned about the crowded, unhygienic living conditions in the tent and tarp camps sheltering some 1.3 million displaced people, the slums are a potentially bigger problem as they do not have even the portable, cleanable latrines that many camps do.

Get the Lowest prices on Long Distance within the U.S. and for International Calling!

Making this situation so much more intolerable is the fact that, considering all of the money and resources standing by for building housing and clean infrastructure, this outbreak was avoidable.

As far as hiring for construction work in Haiti, it is doubtful that U.S. citizens will be allowed to enter the country unless they are already working there and, in any case, companies would be hesitant to bring workers into the country until the cholera is contained. We will keep you posted.

Haiti's President says progress is being made!

The Miami Herald reported that Haitian Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive "insisted this week that progress is being made in his devastated homeland despite the trickle of international aid."

Bellerive spoke at the closing of the Americas Conference, an annual event sponsored by the Miami Herald and the World Bank. Bellerive said "millions are being spent on new highways, students are back in school, a new multimillion dollar teaching hospital is under construction, and thousands of new apartments are coming on line. We've only had 240 days, And what we have accomplished in those brief 240 days is, under the circumstances, remarkable when weighed against the challenges.'' The Herald also reported that "only 18 percent of the $5.3 billion pledged by international donors has been disbursed so far.

Haiti Construction update

According to  Mary Beth Sheridan in her article entitled, "U.S.-Sponsored Conference Pledged  Billions to Rebuild Haiti, But Little Paid Out published in the Washington  Post on July 19th,

"There have been no major outbreaks of disease. But about  180 million square feet of rubble is still piled in heaps around  the capital, while only 5,000 of the 125,000 temporary shelters  promised by the international community have been built."  The reconstruction has  been hobbled by a lack of coordination and cash and by an all-but  incapacitated Haitian government. Although the U.S. government  has spent hundreds of millions on short-term emergency aid, it  has not disbursed the roughly $900 million it pledged for  reconstruction this year, and the rest of the funds are tied to  a supplemental budget bill that has been held up in Congress by  an unrelated dispute over state aid."  Read the full story: http://bit.ly/azcCd4

John Elliott writing for AJC.com describes life in Haiti as a living hell:

"Every day, nearly a million men, women and children are suffering under makeshift tents in the baking tropical heat, while the summer storms blow in and empty stomachs ache. If you want to understand what life is like for these proud people, simply imagine that you put up a small camping tent on the pavement next to I-85, during rush hour. Then puncture a dozen holes in the roof, wait for the rainstorms or the hottest day, endure the cries of children who have no school or recreation, discover the latrines are so close that the stench overwhelms, wonder about the bodies of relatives still buried under rubble a few feet away, and live on just one pound of dried beans and rice per person per day. Oh, and forget about clean water to drink, decent bathing, privacy or employment. This is daily life."
It is reported that millions of tons of supplies are still stuck in warehouses, and  building materials to construct schools, hospitals, residences and towns has not yet been imported!

Construction gaining momentum in some states

Construction employment is beginning to stabilize in Florida, as the number of jobs inched up 0.8 percent in June from May.

This post sponsored by Free Grocery Coupons and More at CoolSavings!

Still, year-over-year construction employment in the Sunshine State was down 7.2 percent, which translates to about 28,000 jobs, according to an analysis of federal employment by Associated General Contractors.

The largest year-over-year increase was in Kansas, where construction employment rose 7.7 percent, or 4,400 jobs. The largest percentage job decrease compared to June 2009 was in Nevada – down 24.4 percent, or 19,500 jobs.

Big companies pushing for work in Haiti

Several companies are vying for Haitian cleanup and rebuilding contracts and will need workers when the money starts flowing. According to a report in Thursday's Sun Sentinel, some companies have spent millions of dollars preparing for the day when they receive contracts to begin work.

AshBritt, Inc., based in Pompano Beach, and Bergeron Emergency Services of Pembroke Pines are each spending huge sums of money hoping to cash in when more than $5 billion earmarked for recovery in Haiti begins to flow.

Sponsor special:  Win Lunch at Arby's for a Year!

AshBritt's CEO estimates his firm has invested $20 million to build a permanent encampment for workers in Haiti that includes living quarters, a mess hall, an infirmary and a staff medic.Randall Perkins says, "we have spent months with consultants to understand the maze of how money is going to be spent."

The head of Bergeron Emergency Services, J.R. Bergeron, acknowledges that his Haitian investment has been about $750,000 to date.

Despite the money pledged for Haiti's reconstruction very little has happened. According to a congressional report issued last month, just 2 percent of the $5.3 billion in near-term aid pledges has been delivered. The responsibility for disbursing the funds that do come in rests with the 26-member reconstruction commission led by Haitian Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive and former U.S. President Bill Clinton.

According to some estimates, the earthquake destroyed more than 100,000 homes, 1,300 schools and 50 hospitals, along with the presidential palace and most government ministries and offices. The resulting rubble would fill the Louisiana Superdome five times.

DRC Group, based in Mobile, Ala., currently seeking an Engineering Manager, and Ceres Environmental Services Inc., of Brooklyn Park, Minn., also have established a presence in Haiti.

Randall Perkins says, "they need outside expertise, and there's going to be lots of money coming in from abroad to make that happen."

The latest on Haiti Construction Jobs

Millions of construction professionals out of work, not just in the United States, but worldwide; an entire country devastated 6 months ago by an earthquake and in dire need of rebuilding. Yet,6 months later, more building Industry workers are out of work and, according to the Irishtimes.com,
"Six months after the huge earthquake – with moutains of rubble remaining, over a million still homeless and conditions in the camps deplorable – progress is being stalled by glacially slow decision-making, private greed and struggles to get aid through"    -  read more
Revelations of mismanagement in the rebuilding of Haiti if reported accurately, would likely reach the level of the BP Oil debacle. Clearly, the construction jobs are required and will bring needed relief to building pros everywhere. Construction companies are as frustrated as workers. The survival of many building companies is at stake. This work will save millions of Haitians, but also tens of thousands of American workers and their companies.

Any progress from the Haitian leadership? According to the Associated Press,
"Haiti's president handed out medals to celebrities, aid-group directors and politicians for post-earthquake work Monday in a ceremony designed to beat back criticism of an uneven recovery that has left 1.6 million people homeless and destitute six months to the day since the disaster. Twenty-three honorees — including actor Sean Penn, CNN anchor Anderson Cooper and the head of the U.N. peacekeeping mission — crossed a podium in front of the crushed, unrepaired national palace to steady applause. Some smiling, some solemn, each received medals and certificates deeming them Knights of the National Order of Honor and Merit."         -read more
I was surprised to see Anderson Cooper take part in this waste of time and money. The time for giving out medals is 10 years from now when most of the rebuilding is completed. Not now, with more than a million people still waiting for shelter.

We keep our eyes open for any and all signs of hiring and get word to you immediately.
Hang in there, the jobs are coming...once the medals get handed out we suppose...

Is construction work finally on the way in Haiti?

Where are the Construction Jobs in Haiti??

Pompano Beach-based AshBritt Inc. so far has invested $25 million in its Haitian reconstruction operation covering a soccer field. Though they don't know yet how big the contracts will be, they're banking from experience on the tantalizing prospect of work for years to come. AshBritt was awarded nearly $900 million from the U.S. government for debris removal after Katrina, collecting and processing some 21 million cubic yards of wreckage.

What has been the holdup in getting the rebuilding going in Haiti at the level everyone expected and the residents require? Very little of the promised foreign aid has been released, caught up either in legislative approval, bureaucratic regulations or in the complications of life in Haiti.

This blog is made possible in part by Restaurant.com. Please support our sponsors and save lots of money!

The U.S. Congress, for example, is still considering a bill that would provide up to $2 billion to Haiti. The Caribbean country, meanwhile, faces a dizzying – and time-consuming – array of logistical and legal issues, including securing permission to tear down buildings whose owners perished in the quake. Any land cleared for construction risks being taken over immediately by squatters.

But Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive, who will oversee the Interim Haiti Reconstruction Commission with former U.S. President Bill Clinton, said financing and construction contracts would start to be issued within months.

“No one is doing anything yet.  All the companies are waiting for the projects to be approved,” said Manuel Estrella, president of Grupo Estrella,

Meanwhile, the Haitian government there has launched a first-of-its-kind design competition to help replace the country’s decimated housing stock.

On June 17, the Republic of Haiti unveiled “Building Back Better Communities,” which invites architects and non-architects alike from around the globe to create homes for a 12-acre former sugar plantation on the outskirts of Port-au-Prince. Because the site was not affected by the quake and is city owned, it is an ideal place for government officials to study different housing types before commissioning them for destroyed neighborhoods, according to competition organizers.

The competition, which will have multiple winners, is divided into two parts to attract the greatest variety of ideas, officials say.

For more information about the competition, visit the Web site.

We'll keep you posted.

Why isn't there more hiring going on to rebuild Haiti?

Based on recent reports out of Haiti, more than $500 million of Haiti's international debt, half of the total, has been forgiven. Billions more have been pledged for short- and medium-term reconstruction.

Still, an estimated 1.5 million people, more than 15 percent of the population, remain without permanent housing. Many of them are in camps living in terrible conditions made worse by rain. Tens of thousands of children remain out of schools that were destroyed. Piles of rubble are everywhere. The tarps and tents rushed to the country after the quake will not last forever so rebuilding is inevitable.

The Obama administration's request for some $1.6 billion in additional aid for Haiti is pending in Congress. At the same time, the Haitian government, which has been overwhelmed by the size and scope of the disaster, is attempting to reassert itself in the administration of the country. Since so many property records were destroyed, construction is slowed until the establishment of a system by which property disputes can be adjudicated and land can be designated for new construction.

The country is still largely in a state of limbo without clear guidance and leadership. The U.S. Military is leaving and only 500 National Guardsmen will remain for three more months. And, to make matters worse, the Hurricane season should delay the start of major building projects.

But, the jobs are coming and many companies are planning their hiring and prescreening applicants so now is the time to be applying for positions, getting into the HR systems of companies, and preparing to travel to and work in Haiti for an extended period. We will keep you posted.

Is anyone hiring in Haiti?

One of our members recently asked, "I've talked to a thousand different people in skilled trades, and no one can find any info on companies that will be working in Haiti. Is it to early to expect any kind of organized construction in that area."

That is the very reason we created this Job Search site. To find those companies that are going to be working in Haiti, and in other countries, and hiring skilled construction professionals.

Our research to date shows that some U.S. companies have received contracts (we've posted them here on the site), but they are being forced to try to use Haitian workers first (politically correct, of course). Unfortunately, the Haitians don't have a big enough, or experienced enough workforce to do the really big jobs (one reason there was so much destruction in the first place), so they are currently doing jobs like clearing debris and building very small structures. The big construction jobs can't start until the tons of debris are cleared.

When the really big construction jobs start, like at the Port and the Government buildings, U.S. companies will need skilled workers to get the jobs done right, on time, and on budget.

We have posted companies that will be rebuilding the Port. They are looking for workers with some maritime construction experience but it is always worth taking a look at their openings and getting in front of these companies with your skills.

$70 million port development planned in Port-au-Prince

Maritime construction skills needed.

Haiti's WIN Group and Miami-based Santé Holding Corp. announced a $70 million project to redevelop Terminal Varreux, Haiti's largest privately-owned shipping terminal and port facility.

This represents the largest private sector investment made public in Haiti since January's earthquake and will support relief efforts and lay the foundation for the modernization of the country's shipping industry.

The plan includes a new port and jetties, a 150-acre terminal open to all maritime lines, improvements in existing infrastructure plus additional facilities. The project is expected to create about 3,000 jobs in Haiti.

The first step in the three-to-five-year project involves building two deep-water jetties for container cargo.
Construction  will begin in about 60 days and will generate about 800 jobs.

"There seems to be a stabilization of customers seeking projects, or there's an increase of activity out there," said Mark P. Wylie, president of the Central Florida Chapter of Associated Builders and Contractors Inc.  read the full story

If history teaches us anything, the price tag will likely be twice that number especially when the Western builders get involved. Good for construction workers! Don't miss your chance to work on this enormous construction project for many years.

Construction Spending Drops to 6-Year Low

Only 4 Out of 337 Cities Added Construction Jobs in 2009 As Construction Spending Drops to 6-Year Low

February 2, 2010
Virtually every community in America experienced a decline in construction employment based on a new analysis of federal employment statistics prepared by the Associated General Contractors of America.  Given that construction spending declined by $100 billion last year to a six-year low of $903 billion, it is easy to understand why only four communities added construction jobs between December 2008 and December 2009.  The lone bright spot last year was the stimulus, which helped boost highway and street construction spending last year.  The lesson is that Congress needs to pass a jobs bill with significant new infrastructure investments to avoid further job losses.

No one can survive a hurricane in a tent

What if some of the president's stimulus money went into U.S. construction workers building buildings for emergency shelters around Port-au-Prince — over the next four to five months?

And maybe it doesn't have to be 100 percent U.S. funds. Maybe former President Clinton can also raise some, and the balance of the world kick in as well.

Shovel-ready project. Employ unemployed American construction workers to build the buildings. Hire American concrete, steel and shipping companies. And if the building dimensions and layout are done correctly, the buildings can be later converted to apartments, manufacturing buildings, etc. It would leave Haiti with some infrastructure it has never had. And their government can take their time rebuilding the inner city of Port-au-Prince.

Luke Pickett's Letter to the Editor, SeaCoast Online

Clinton picks Scot to rebuild Haiti

FORMER US president Bill Clinton has turned to a Scottish architect to help re-build Haiti after the country's devastating earthquake.

John McAslan, who was raised in Dunoon and runs one of London's most successful architectural firms, has been personally asked by Clinton to help the shattered country.

McAslan, 55, returned from Haiti last week after a fact finding mission to see the extent of the damage.

In his first interview on the project, he told how honoured he was to be appointed by Clinton to rebuild homes, hospitals and schools in the country.

But he claimed the task was almost "unimaginable" in scale and will require the backing of governments and the United Nations for years to come. Read the entire story

Haiti will have to start almost from scratch

"The government ministries — nearly all have been decimated," says Rajiv Shah, who is coordinating the U.S. relief and rebuilding effort as administrator of the U.S. Agency for International Development. "The leadership of so many of the organizations that Haitians look to — many have died and many have suffered tremendous loss of relatives and property. It's extraordinary."

The business sector also has been crippled, Shah says.

"Just one example: 60% of the construction firm capacity in Haiti was destroyed by the earthquake," he says.

"What is needed is a Marshall Plan for Haiti," says Irish billionaire Denis O'Brien, whose company, Digicel, provides mobile service in the country. "For once and for all, we have to lift Haiti off the floor."

DuraSip to Hire 100

Most Haitians are living in tents, and as hurrican season approaches, government agencies are scrambling to begin building durable homes.

A company out of Union, Mississippii, is sending a sales representative in hopes of becoming a major part of reconstructing Haiti by providing low-cost, durable homes.

Construction could begin within 90 days according to company offcials.
Housing contracts have not been laid out yet but once funding is secure, DuraSip will need to hire as many as 100 U.S. residents.

American Construction Skills and Knowledge needed ASAP!

According to one Engineering expert, most of the buildings that collapsed and buried people were made of heavy substandard concrete or cinder blocks with no lateral supports and supporting columns that were too small in diameter. Those columns were formed by substandard steel, or rebar, that also was too small and smooth so that it slipped when the earth.
